Old Rag Mtn

Also in July, we participated in the 5th annual Old Rag Mountain hiking and camping adventure organized by our good pal and Montana mountain man, Jed Link.  The mountain is in Shenandoah National Park, but we camped at a nearby campground in Syria, VA.  We camped there two summers ago with the pugs (see post), but we couldn't exactly do the 8-mile hike considering our dogs' not-so-athletic abilities.  The 3,291-foot summit of Old Rag can only be attained after strategically maneuvering through a section of rock scrambles - the best part of the hike, aside from the beautiful views of Shenandoah.  I summitted Ol' Rag with the Links back in 2007 and this year Mark (and his repaired knees!) conquered it too.  In fact, we knocked out the hike in impressive time (5 hrs) in 90+ degree weather... which I believe more than compensates for my passing out at the campfire promptly after dinner :)

  1. With the humidity, it was record-setting heat index. It was awful. And awesome.
