Last week I was in Montréal, Quebéc for the International Congress of Human Genetics meeting, the global version of the American Society of Human Genetics meeting I usually attend every year. I think there were about 7,000 attendees... not a huge meeting compared to those for neuroscience, cancer, heart disease, etc. but a pretty good turnout for our little genetics community. There were a lot of excellent talks and cutting-edge research presented.
Montréal had a European feel... most signs were in French (not as bilingual as I had imagined) but fortunately for "moi" the majority of people did speak English since parlez-vous français = NO. The city was very nice, clean and safe... old Montreal had many cool old buildings and architecture. The friendliness factor was not quite as high as other places I've been. A couple more observations... the Quebecois natives seemed to smoke more and use their cell phones less. My co-worker and native Canadian, George, convinced me to try a local treat: Poutine. How could I turn down French fries covered in gravy and cheese curds?! Yum.
Here are a some pics...

Au revoir for now!
First of all, love your stripey shirt. Second of all, I noticed the same thing in Prague and Germany. Way more smoking, way fewer cell phones out. Anyway, Montreal in your pics looks more beautiful than I remember! :)
