Gertie's 30th

I'll admit that I was somewhat anxious about the arrival of "the 30s." However, January 8th came and went, and I'm still the same old me - with only the slightest little emphasis on "old" ;) And to be honest, watching episodes of The Jersey Shore (don't judge) makes me thankful that I am no longer a twenty-something. I was never quite the Snooki type, but I've had my share of hangovers and I'm glad to be done with that phase. Don't get me wrong, I'm still down to party ... just not til 4 am!

Apparently turning a new decade justifies the need to do something big to celebrate. Fortunately, the hubs picked up on my apprehension and planned a surprise getaway. I didn't marry no dummy! A few days before my birthday, the secret locale was revealed:

New Orleans, Louisiana... a.k.a. the Crescent City/the Big Easy/Nawlins or simply, NOLA!

I was thrilled to be heading somewhere south! Mark had gone to N.O. for a conference last year and thought I'd really enjoy it too (and he was right). So off we went, to the other end of the mighty Mississippi River. After we got in and put our bags down, our first stop was Pat O'Brien's on Bourbon Street. A hurricane for me, and a local "Abita" beer for the Mr. The hurricane went down way too easily. I also had a daiquiri, which fortunately, was so cold that I couldn't drink it too fast. I never did imbibe a "hand grenade" - that just sounded like trouble!

We had no specific itinerary for the weekend - just lots of walking around the French Quarter (our hotel was right in the heart of it), eating, drinking, and listening to live music. Bourbon Street definitely lived up to all the hype... sooo many bars! I can't even imagine how crazy it would be there during Marti Gras! The city had a laid back feel. People of all ages wandering about, dressed up and dressed down. It was fun to be in town when the Saints were playing. Too bad they lost - Bourbon Street would have been wild! As for food, we sampled some tasty chicken gumbo and jambalaya ... the seafood variety just isn't our style. The beignets and cafe au lait, however, I could eat any day! In fact, we got our fix at Cafe du Monde for breakfast all 3 days!!

On my birthday I had a 4-hour combined tour/photography lesson. A very cool concept, but next time I will probably wear sneakers! I got a lot of great shots, though I've still got a thing or ten to learn. That night, had a fantastic dinner at La Boca, an Argentinian steakhouse. Mark knows that filet mignon is the way to this girl's heart!

It was fun to get out and see a new place, and celebrate the big 3-0 in style. Thanks Sweetie! Glad I could spend it with you ♡
