"It is in giving that we receive"

I feel the need to share something with you. I have been following the story of Pamela Paulk, VP of Human Resources at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System. She donated her kidney to a co-worker about a week ago. I read her blog and literally get tears in my eyes thinking of her incredible selflessness. I mean, WOW, who does that?! Now I am aware that real people, just like you or me, are truly capable of this extraordinary sacrifice. I know that I would certainly want my family to donate my organs should something take me from this world, but could I do it while I was alive?

You can read Pamela's blog HERE.

Mark and I aren't ready for kids just yet, but some of our friends and family are having babies. I'm just in awe at how miraculous it is - a miracle so amazing that the awesomeness of it all extends way beyond its biology (hello, I'm a geneticist!). To be able to create another person is simply the coolest thing ever. And then when I think about Pamela and being able to save another person's life - well that has got to be a close second, if not tied for first, for being one of the most powerful things we humans are capable of.

I'm not asking everyone to go out and start giving body parts away, especially considering that I myself am not even ready to make that kind of decision right now. I just wanted to share this incredible story since it has encouraged me to think more about organ donation - whether in this lifetime or after it - and maybe it will inspire you too.
